The Aeolian Islands by Boat: Volcanoes, Granita and Stromboli by Night

North of Sicily, the seven Aeolian Islands rise straight out of a deep blue sea — an archipelago of live volcanoes, black-sand beaches and villages that time barely touched. It is the wildest, most dramatic charter ground in Italy, and the one where a boat is genuinely the best way to see it. A week here is about volcanoes, swimming and the slow island rhythm.

Lipari and Vulcano

Most charters base around Lipari, the archipelago's lively hub, with its pumice quarries and hilltop citadel. Neighbouring Vulcano offers a natural sulphur mud bath and a walk to the steaming crater rim — sail across for the afternoon.

Salina — the green island

Salina is the fertile one: caper fields, Malvasia vineyards and the twin peaks that gave the archipelago the granita-and-brioche breakfast. Anchor off Santa Marina or Pollara, where Il Postino was filmed, for one of the group's gentlest days.

Panarea — the scene

The smallest and chicest island, a whitewashed village with a summer scene to rival Capri. Anchor off the islet of Basiluzzo or in the bay of Cala Junco and tender in for the evening.

Stromboli by night

The climax of any Aeolian week: anchor off Stromboli as the light fades and watch the live volcano throw glowing bursts into the dark — the Sciara del Fuoco, the "stream of fire," running down its flank to the sea. There is no experience quite like it in the Mediterranean.
