Tuscany, Elba & the Tuscan Archipelago: A Gentle Italian Sailing Week
A relaxed Tuscan Archipelago sailing itinerary β Elba's beaches, Napoleon's exile island, and the quiet islets of Giglio and Capraia. Italy's easiest, most family-friendly ground.
The Tuscan Archipelago is the gentle, green side of Italian sailing. Seven islands scattered between the mainland and Corsica, warm shallow seas, short hops and sandy beaches β it is the easiest, most family-friendly cruising ground in Italy, and a lovely contrast to the drama of the Amalfi Coast or the glamour of Sardinia.
Elba β the anchor of the archipelago
Napoleon's island of exile is the largest and most varied: mountains, vineyards, and a coast of sandy coves and clear water. Anchor off Fetovaia or Cavoli in the south-west for the best swimming, and put in at pretty Porto Azzurro or the capital, Portoferraio, with its Medici fortifications, for an evening ashore.
Capraia β the wild one
The most remote island, of volcanic origin and part of a national park β bare, dramatic and almost car-free. A single harbour village and coves reachable only by sea. A day here feels a world away.
Giglio β the jewel
Giglio's medieval hilltop castello and turquoise coves make it a favourite. Anchor in Cala dell'Allume or off the Campese beach, and climb up to the walled village for sunset and a plate of the island's own Ansonaco wine.
Pianosa and Montecristo
Flat, protected Pianosa (a former prison island) has restricted, permit-based access and pristine water; Montecristo β Dumas's treasure island β is a strict nature reserve you admire from the sea. Both underline how protected and unspoilt this archipelago remains.
Practical notes
