Liguria is Italy's original riviera and still its most elegant: Portofino's tiny square of a harbour, Camogli's tall painted houses, San Fruttuoso's abbey reachable only by sea, and then the Cinque Terre — five villages stitched into cliffs that receive millions by train and a fortunate few by boat. Beyond them, Portovenere guards the Gulf of Poets, where Byron swam and the evenings still feel like it.
This is short-hop cruising with long, good dinners: the distances are small, the food is Genoa's — pesto, focaccia, anchovies — and every anchorage has a village above it worth the tender ride. Charters base out of Genoa, Chiavari or La Spezia; a week runs the whole riviera with time to linger.

Cinque Terre by sea
The five villages were built to be seen from the water. Anchor off Vernazza in the evening after the day-trippers' trains leave.
San Fruttuoso
A thousand-year-old abbey on a cove with no road — plus the underwater Christ of the Abyss statue for snorkellers. Only boats get the dawn version.
Portofino evenings
The Mediterranean's most photogenic harbour, four boutiques deep. Moor stern-to if you can get a berth; anchor off and tender in if you can't.

Pesto was invented behind this coast. Trofie, focaccia di Recco, Sciacchetrà wine from Cinque Terre terraces — provision generously.

Where do Liguria charters start?
Genoa (GOA) and La Spezia bracket the coast — Genoa for the Portofino end, La Spezia for the Gulf of Poets and Cinque Terre. Chiavari and Lavagna are the quieter mid-coast marinas.
Can you anchor off the Cinque Terre?
Yes in settled weather — the villages have small day-anchorages and the marine protected area sets zones your crew knows. Overnights are usually at Portovenere, Levanto or back toward Sestri Levante.
Is Portofino berthing realistic?
The harbour has very few visitor berths at very Portofino prices. The classic play is anchoring in the bay or at San Fruttuoso and tendering in for the evening — same view, saner bill.
When to go?
May, June and September. Liguria's cliffs make afternoon shade and the sea stays calm inside the gulfs; July–August is lovely but busy ashore. October often gifts a final flat-calm week.
